Description

Knowledge exchange, public engagement, impact, outreach and dissemination are commonly heard phrases in today’s research conversations and university corridors. The days of doing research for the sake of it are over. It’s now your responsibility to convert your research into solutions and outcomes that will benefit the world and the lives of the people who live in it. The key to finding these pathways from research to the real world is communication.

At UC, Three Minute Thesis (3MT) and Pitch for Funds (P4F) are much more than competitions, they are research communication training grounds, each concluding with a contest and the chance to win prize money.

During the training program, you will learn about verbal, visual and written aspects of communication and gain skills that will help you build confidence, tame complex language and translate your research for public consumption. This knowledge will set you up for success in teaching, job interviews, the mainstream media, and more. Plus, you will have the chance to build your profile (both online and off), and increase the visibility and reach of your research by making connections with those who can help you make a difference.

Below is a sample of some of the workshops on offer in the 2017 3MT and P4F training program. These will be advertised shortly and are open to everyone, whether or not you plan to participate in the competitions.

  • How to pitch, perform and persuade
  • Communicating the impact of your research
  • Getting your research story published in the mainstream media
  • Radio ready – preparing for a media interview
  • Speech writing
  • Presenting your research in English: an introduction to the basics for those with English as a second or other language
  • Improvisation tools for research communication, and more!

Join us at this launch lunch to find out more about what 3MT and P4F are and why you should get involved. Past participants will share their experiences and answer questions, and refreshments will be served.
